| By Tracy Petrocelli Introduction
The United States of America - self-proclaimed guardian of freedom and human rights of the people of the world - spends millions of dollars executing its own citizens. A study by a team at Columbia University has shown the system that supports the death penalty to be so deeply flawed that "68% of all death sentences reviewed by appellate courts between 1973 and 1995 were reversed due to serious error.... far from mere "technicalities," the errors most often leading to reversal were incompetent legal counsel, suppression of evidence by police or prosecutors, and improper jury instructions by judges". (New York Times,Feb. 23, 2002).

Summary
For the duration of my years on Death Row, Nevada, I have fought to have an unjust conviction overturned but because I am alone in the world and without money I have not been in a position to engage an attorney skilled in relation to the Death Penalty - nor has there ever been funds available to conduct even the most basic investigative work crucial to any case, let alone one of this gravity. Thus, I have been fighting a battle common to the poor of the United States caught up in the legal system: that is, the futility of trying to obtain justice when there is no money to mount a defence. This is the reason for my appeal: to raise funds to pay for the expertise needed to defend a capital case, thereby giving me a chance to live.
My struggle has been sustained by the memories of a time when I was able to overcome a hard beginning in life to eventually travel the world helping many in need - and by my unwavering determination to return home free. Please read my story below. I pray it will inspire you to help me in my fight against injustice. |
